PrerequisiteRetrievability
The precondition for everything below. If AI crawlers are blocked, your pages are unreadable, or your entity data is contradictory, no mention, citation or selection can happen.
People increasingly get their answers from AI: Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. AI visibility is whether your brand is part of those answers, or absent from them.
Search used to end at a list of links, and SEO was the work of ranking in that list. AI-driven search assembles the answer itself. It breaks a question into subtopics, retrieves sources for each, decides which sources to trust, and writes a response that names, quotes or recommends a small number of brands. Everyone else is simply not in the answer. There is no page two.
That changes what visibility means. A business can hold solid Google rankings and still be invisible in AI answers, because the systems assembling those answers weigh different things: whether your content can be retrieved at all, whether your identity is unambiguous, and whether independent sources corroborate what you say about yourself.
AI visibility has three observable outcomes: mention, citation and selection. Before any of them can occur, there is a prerequisite: retrievability.
The precondition for everything below. If AI crawlers are blocked, your pages are unreadable, or your entity data is contradictory, no mention, citation or selection can happen.
The AI names your brand in its answer. A mention builds recall and legitimacy, even without a link. It generally comes from being clearly described across the open web, not just on your own site.
The AI links to your content as a source for a claim. Citations require retrievable, clearly structured, factual pages that an AI system can safely ground its answer in.
The AI recommends you as the answer: the business to call, the product to buy, the source to trust. Selection is the commercial outcome, and it depends on accumulated authority signals, not a single tactic.
Most advice treats these as one thing. They are not. A brand can be mentioned but never cited, or cited but never selected, and the fix is different in each case. The signals behind citation and selection are the research territory of our Periodic Table of Digital Authority™.
Answers assembled at the top of Google results, grounded in retrieved pages. Closest to classic SEO, and the reason good SEO still matters. See what Google AI Overviews are and the Avantix AI Overview case study.
Conversational answers with their own retrieval and browsing layer. Being recommended here is a distinct problem from ranking in Google. See how ranking in ChatGPT works.
An answer engine built on live retrieval and visible citations. Rewards clearly structured, factual, citable pages more directly than almost any other surface.
Google's assistant surfaces, drawing on Google's index and Knowledge Graph. Entity clarity, structured data and a consistent identity carry unusual weight here.
SEO is the foundation of AI visibility, not a competitor to it. Pages that are crawlable, fast, well structured and genuinely authoritative are the raw material AI systems retrieve and ground their answers in, and ranking well in Google can improve the odds of appearing in answers built on Google's index. But the ceiling is different. SEO optimises for a ranked position; AI visibility optimises for being mentioned, cited and selected inside the answer itself. The industry has produced a small pile of acronyms for this work, including AEO, GEO and AIO, and we have written a plain-language guide to SEO versus AEO versus GEO, along with deeper pieces on answer engine optimisation (AEO) and generative engine optimisation (GEO). Whatever the label, the umbrella outcome is the same: AI search visibility.
When a business is missing from AI answers, the cause is usually one of a small number of failures, and most of them are invisible from inside the business.
AI crawlers blocked in robots.txt, content locked behind scripts, or pages that render nothing an AI system can read. A common and frequently overlooked failure.
Inconsistent names, addresses and descriptions across the web, or a name shared with another entity, leave AI unsure who you are. Uncertain systems leave you out rather than risk being wrong.
Without schema markup and clear entity signals, AI must guess at what your business is, does and serves. Competitors who state it in machine-readable form get chosen instead.
AI systems weigh what independent sources say about you. If your claims exist only on your own site, there is little for an answer to safely ground in.
Our guide to how to rank in AI search works through these failures and their fixes in detail.
AI visibility can be measured, and should be measured before it is worked on. Measurement means testing where a brand actually appears: which questions surface it in AI Overviews, whether ChatGPT and Perplexity mention or cite it, how it is described, and how that compares with competitors. Our guides to checking your AI visibility and tracking ChatGPT rankings cover the practical methods.
Improvement then follows the findings rather than a generic checklist: restoring retrievability, correcting and structuring entity data, building the corroborating signals that citation and selection depend on, and re-measuring. This is the discipline we call digital authority, and it is the work Digital Dominator does: measuring and improving the digital authority that determines whether brands are found, cited and selected across Google and AI search.
We run a private diagnostic review before we speak, so the first conversation starts with real data on where your brand appears in AI answers and what to fix first.
